Grand cruisers
are an archaic type of vessel that were a half-step in size between a
cruiser and a battle ship. Due to the loss of plasma drive technology,
production of this type of ship is no longer in the Imperium, as ships
of this size are too large to be powered by standard cruiser engines and
too small to contain the massive cores used to power battleships. This
makes the grand cruisers that remain in the Emperor's service at once
ancient and irreplaceable. Imperial fleet doctrine has thus evolved away
from their wide-spread use, and the few operational ships of this type
left are often relegated to second line patrol and training duties, or
else are reserves that are called upon only in the most dire of
circumstances. The Guardian for example, an Exorcist
class ship, came to Battlegroup Fortitas as a reserve ship from a nearby
sector.
The
Exorcist class is one of several variants of the venerable
Vengeance class of grand cruiser. Unlike the other variants, it is
optimized for providing ranges support from its weapons batteries and
launch bays. As such, it is well suited for flagship duty. The
Guardian is often used in just that manner, serving as the center of
a convoy defense force or else leading a long range patrol. However, on
occasion she has sallied forth with with the fleet for major
engagements, during which she has acquitted herself well.
