Fore!
Nintendo's
latest console includes something that has not been seen in the gaming world
for some time: A pack-in game, called Wii Sports. What you get is a set of 5
different games, including bowling, tennis, golf, baseball, boxing. Each
game is somewhat simpler when compared to standalone video game renditions
of these sports. For example, you do not control the movement of your
character in tennis, only their swinging. Also, in baseball only hitting and
pitching is simulated. Fielding and base running are automatically
controlled by the computer. While this means that many video game veterans
will probably find the Wii Sports version of their favorite sport lacking.
On the other hand, the simplicity of the sports in this game means that it
is perhaps the ultimate party game, as literally anyone can pick up the
controller and be playing in minutes. Not only are the sports represented
already familiar to most people, the fact that you can control the game
using the same body movements as you would to play the sport in real life
means the learning curve has been reduced to practically zero. Not only is
the game easy to control, but you can create a custom avatar (called a Mii)
that you can then use to represent yourself in the game.
Make no
mistake, this is not the kind of game that you would sit down with by
yourself and play for hours on end. Rather, it is the kind of game you and a
group of friends can have a great time with. As a pack-in for a system that
is supposed to be appealing to those who have never played a video game
before, this makes Wii Sports an ideal choice!
