Quarters A: The Commander's House

Traditionally, the senior officer quarters on a naval base are lettered alphabetically. The largest, grandest house is reserved for the installation commander, and naturally received the letter "A." The former commander's quarters on Mare Island is still in use, although not as a residence; it is available for rent for parties and receptions. The house dates from about 1907, when it was re-built on the foundations of the previous house that had been destroyed in the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906.
