BATTLE REPORT

Minor Engagement:

Space Marines Vs. Imperial Navy

INTRODUCTION

This battle was between my Imperial Navy (IN) fleet and my friend Sean's Salamanders Space Marines (SM) fleet. Sean and I have been playing BFG together for over two years, but this battle took on a special significance as it was likely our last, since I had gotten a new assignment as would be moving soon.

SCENARIO & SETUP

For our final battle, Sean and I settled on the "Minor Engagement" scenario that he and I had developed over the course of our games together. This scenario was featured in Issue #22 of the Warp Rift BFG E-zine, and it is well-suited to getting a small game started quickly. We decided to play on a 4'x4' (120cm x 120cm) table, and rolled for terrain as normal. I lost the initiative roll, but Sean elected to set up second. This meant I would still have first turn. Since I was setting up first, I chose to set  up in the corner deployment zones. This would hopefully give me more time for my long-range firepower (in the form of the Apollo's Nova Cannon and lances) to whittle down Sean's fleet as it closed. The initial deployment and terrain placement are shown below:

Above: This is a map of our playing field. The Grey dots represent an asteroid field, while the pink represents gas & dust clouds. If you can't figure out that is supposed to be a planet in the upper left, then I have bigger problems than I thought!

FORCES

We agreed to play to at 1500 points. I played using a Gothic fleet list, while Sean was using the Armageddon fleet list so that he could take along a pair of Lunar class cruisers. My list was a bit unusual in that I elected to not take a battleship, which is something I had commonly done in the past in a game of this size. In its place, took two large squadrons of escorts, one of Cobras and the other a mix of Firestorms and Swords. It is also worth noting that I squadroned my Lunar, Dictator, and Gothic to improve their leadership and cohesion. Also squadroned were the two light cruisers, for much the same reason. Here are our respective fleet lists, along with a shot of our initial deployment formations:

IN Gothic Sector List:

Apollo (Mars Class Battlecruiser)
Undaunted (Dictator Class Cruiser)
Orion (Lunar Class Cruiser)
Firebrand (Gothic Class Cruiser)
Panache (Dauntless Class Light Cruiser, Lance Variant)
Darter (Dauntless Class Light Cruiser, Lance Variant)
302nd Escort Squadron (3x Sword, 2x Firestorm)
101st Escort Squadron (5x Cobra)

IN Armageddon Sector List

Battle Barge
Lunar Class Cruiser
Lunar Class Cruiser
3x Strike Cruisers
4xGladius
