My Visit to Mare Island Naval Shipyard

In January 2011, I had the opportunity to visit the
former Mare Island Naval Shipyard, located near Vallejo, CA. This facility
was the first naval shipyard built by the US Navy on the West Coast, and
built hundreds of ships including the battleship USS California. However,
the yard was closed in the mid-90's as a result of the BRAC. Certain parts
of the base have been re-developed; 300 new housing units have been built on
the property, and some of the industrial buildings are now occupied by
civilian firms. However, the old senior officer's housing and base chapel
are not only still standing, but still in use. Here are some of the pictures
I took during my visit to this fascinating place:
